ESPN NFL reporter Michael Smith is not only a senior writer for ESPN.com & a panelist for the cable channel’s Around the Horn program but he’s also one of, if not the most most fashionable reporters on TV.

Michael previously covered the New England Patriots at the Boston Globe for three years and can currently be seen as a feature reporter for the ESPN television newsmagazine E:60.

We had the oppurtunity to “stop” this jet-setting young man and ask him a few questions on style and get the real deal, inside story, as to what make Mr. Michael Smith a Local Stylistocrat Style Icon!

Best Stylistocratic advice from your parents? “Do you.” It’s not about the labels or the price tag or what’s “trendy.” It’s about establishing YOUR look and wearing it with confidence. Don’t be afraid to take risks and push the envelope.

My Personal Style icons are… Growing up it was my grandfather. As far as celebs I always loved Michael Jordan’s attitude toward dress. I once read where he always wanted to look his best because if someone only got to see him once he wanted to make a lasting impression.

Describe your personal style: Subtle. Sophisticated. More conservative but with a touch of flare here and there.

I build my daily look around? My necktie.

My Personal Style quirk: I try to avoid wearing the same shirt/tie/suit combo as much as possible. My wife always tells me no one remembers what I wore or when/where I wore it but I do.

My Favorite designers are: Ike Behar, Ted Baker, Armani.

My Most cherished item is… Don’t know that I have one.

I feel best wearing? A suit. I don’t think there’s such a thing as being overdressed. I don’t mind standing out.

The first thing I look at in another Stylistocrat’s outfit? Probably the shoes.

I always break this fashion rule… I make my own rules. (Not really but it sounds cool to say.)

I never break this fashion rule… See above.

I’ll never get caught wearing? A business suit with more than three buttons. Even my three buttons are feeling neglected.

The most underrated item in menswear/womenswear? Men – collar stays (do those count?)

I dress to impress who? My wife. If she likes how i look it doesn’t matter whether anyone else does.

Shine your own shoes? Y/N? No

My favorite stores? Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, The Gap

My favorite musical artist and how do they relect in your style? Andre 3000 is one of my top two or three all time favorite MCs. Takes a lot of risks and pulls it off because he sets the trends rather than follow them.

Your next “must have” purchase is? A bad ass watch.

I only buy __________ in Europe or from Europe. I’m not that big time.

I skimp when buying? Socks. I need to step my game up.

I tend to splurge on…? Business suits. Once I got my first custom that was it.

My favorite item of clothing is… My T shirts. I’ve managed to collect some really cool ones.

My Guilty pleasure is… in general? Five Guys Burgers and Fries

Cologne, skincare? Sure. Nothing extravagant though really

I consider _______ My most stylish city (Milan, Paris, London, Miami, New York, other) Probably New York. All great places, though.

When I was high school I wore? A lot of horrible ensembles. Anyone who went to high school with me will laugh at the fact that I’m answering questions about my style.

My favorite Sports are? Football, Basketball

My favorite fashion magazine? GQ

My favorite vacation spot is? New Orleans. Home.

My favorite neighborhood restaurant? Gianni’s Pizza in Framingham, Mass

Michael is proof-positive that STYLE isn’t dead; now, if only the Michael Irvins, Deion Sanders, and Emmitt Smiths of the world would listen to his “3-Button Max” Rule… SMDH.
