SPORTS UNTOLD DRESS CODE BELONGS TO…
February 4, 2011
So, last month while watching HBO’s 27/7 on the Penguins vs the Capitals in the Winter Classic I began thinking… dang, these guys are always dressed to the nines. What gives?
I mean seriously… when I think hockey players I think “goons”, “macho men on ice” and “The baddest guys outside MMA”. I mean you almost expect to hear ECW, ECW at some hockey rinks.
Once, I started digging around what I found was very refreshing! These guys have the strictest dress code in professional sports!

Many outside the sport don’t know but the dress code was written into the NHL’s collective bargaining agreement in 2005.
Many players aren’t shy to don a suit jacket with a flannel-type design, while NHL Superstar Brendan Shanahan has been known for stopping the female persuasion in their tracks wearing anything navy blue, white or dark.
And not long ago, Ray Emery’s wardrobe included 50 pairs of shoes, a dozen watches, diamond chains and a $4,000 suit. Now that being said you would think Emery, should be recognized as the best-dressed player? That answer is no… the honor goes to…. Mr. Sean Avery (seen below at NYFW)!

Sean Avery by some accounts the most hated player in the National Hockey League. A true goon, among goons. However many didn’t know he joined the estrogen-infused world of fashion as an unpaid intern at Vogue magazine a few years ago.

That means the stocky, 28-year-old athlete — who was at the time in the midst of the NHL playoffs — was “answering phones, working photo shoots, getting samples, contacting people, working the gamut,” according to O’Connell. Talk about a second job!

Avery, who makes $2 million a year with the Rangers and has cavorted with starlets since his days with the Los Angeles Kings, initiated the contact with Vogue editor Anna Wintour.
Avery, who never earned a college degree because he was drafted into the NHL right after high school, has said he wants to be a fashion magazine editor.

Can you name these NHL Best Dressed above???
Rangers’ fans are well familiar with Avery’s fashion sense. He may be the first hockey player ever to sport a pair of trendy glasses in the Rangers official yearbook.
